An Overview of the Ameda Mya

The Ameda Mya Joy Plus is part of a broader lineup of pumps from Ameda. Here’s a quick rundown:

  • Ameda Mya Joy (Original): This pump was marketed as portable but required batteries to achieve that functionality—not the most convenient setup.
  • Ameda Mya Joy Plus: The more recent version we’re focusing on today. It boasts a compact design and slightly updated features, but still falls short of being a top-tier pump.

Features and Functionality

The Ameda Mya Joy Plus is a lightweight, affordable pump with a simple interface. Here’s what you need to know about its operation:

  • Stimulation and Expression Modes: It starts in stimulation mode with faster cycle speeds (up to 120 CPM at the lowest vacuum). After two minutes, it auto-switches to expression mode, or you can switch manually using the mode button.
  • Cycle and Suction Variability: In expression mode, the cycle speeds range from 66 to 25 CPM. While the faster cycles are a pro, the suction performance can be inconsistent. The pump is marketed to reach 250 mmHg, but in my testing, it rarely delivered on that promise.

Flange Kits Matter

The performance of this pump heavily depends on the flange kit you use.

  • Included Kit: The backflow protector in the default kit is flimsy, causing unreliable suction.
  • Universal Kit: Ameda’s universal kit offers a sturdier backflow protector, resulting in better suction.
  • Third-Party Kits: Pairing the pump with a Spectra-style flange kit improved suction and consistency during my tests.

⚠️ Important Note: Using third-party flange kits might strain the motor and reduce the pump’s lifespan. Consider this trade-off carefully.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Lightweight and portable (if you overlook the need for constant power).
  • Faster cycle speeds than some competitors, including the Spectra.
  • Affordable and widely available through insurance plans.

Cons

  • Inconsistent suction performance, especially with the default flange kit.
  • Not truly portable unless you use batteries.
  • Limited flange sizing options (default size is 25mm, which is uncommon for most users).

Optimization Tips

  • Check Your Flange Size: The pump’s default 25mm flange may not fit most users. Consider using inserts or a different flange kit.
  • Upgrade the Flange Kit: Switching to a sturdier backflow protector or a Spectra-style kit can improve suction.
  • Be Cautious with Frankenpumping: Mixing parts from different brands can yield better performance but might shorten the pump’s motor life.
  • Start with Stimulation Mode: Allow the pump to initiate letdowns before switching to expression mode.

Who Should Use This Pump?

The Ameda Mya Joy Plus may be a suitable option for:

  • Moms with limited insurance options, as it is frequently available for free through DME companies.
  • Light or occasional pumpers who don’t rely on their pump heavily to maintain milk supply.
  • Those in need of an affordable backup pump rather than a primary one.

However, this pump is not ideal for exclusive pumpers or moms who require a high-performing, reliable pump for long-term use. The motor’s moderate capabilities and the variability in suction performance make it better suited for occasional use rather than heavy, daily pumping sessions.

Final Thoughts

The Ameda Mya Joy Plus is a serviceable option for moms working within insurance limitations or seeking an entry-level pump. While it has some frustrating limitations, there are workarounds to enhance its performance. If this is your pump, don’t worry—you can still make it work with a few adjustments!
