Becoming a mother is a life-changing event, and for Alexus, it was an extraordinary journey filled with challenges, perseverance, and triumph. Pumping in the NICU

“My daughter was born with a congenital lung defect and spent the first four weeks in the NICU,” Alexus recounted. “I had to pump right away, but she couldn’t even have my full-fat breast milk at first—it had to be skimmed.”

Those initial weeks were a whirlwind of pumping every drop, balancing NICU visits, and recovering from a cesarean section.

“I didn’t know much about pumping or flange sizing back then. I was trying to figure everything out on my own. That’s when I found the Pumping for Working Moms program—it became my lifeline.”

Discovering the Program

By six months postpartum, Alexus knew she needed more support.

“I was spending 30 to 45 minutes pumping and barely making enough,” she explained.

“One day, I was in that TikTok rabbit hole again and found this mom that was pumping massive amounts, and I was like, ‘Why doesn’t my output look like that?’” Alexus shared.

“It really made me question if I was doing enough for my baby. But once I found the program, I realized that comparing myself to others wasn’t helping—it was about finding what worked for me and my baby.”

One of Alexus’s biggest breakthroughs came from experimenting with flange sizes.

“I started at a 27mm flange, but after learning about sizing through the program, I ended up using 17mm and 19mm flanges depending on the time of day. My output improved almost immediately—it was incredible.”

Building Confidence at Work

Returning to work brought a new set of challenges, but Alexus adapted with determination.

“Adding pumps during my commute, as suggested during a group call, was a game-changer. It felt awkward at first, but my supply went from barely enough to more than enough. It was the small, actionable tips like that which made all the difference.”

She also highlighted the supportive community.

“The group calls and online forums were invaluable. Hearing other moms’ stories and advice reassured me I wasn’t alone.”

Embracing Flexibility and Success

At 14 months postpartum, Alexus continues to breastfeed her daughter.

The program taught me how to listen to my body and adjust my schedule as needed. Now, pumping feels manageable, even enjoyable. I used to dread pumping—it hurt, and I would stay up at night full of anxiety about the next session,” Alexus admitted.

“It felt like such a chore, and I honestly didn’t think I’d make it to a year. But with the support I found in the program, everything changed. I learned to understand my body, adjust my routine, and make pumping work for me. Now, I’ve not only surpassed my one-year goal, but I also enjoy pumping—it’s part of my life that feels manageable and even empowering. I’m still going strong at 14 months because I finally got the support I needed to make this journey sustainable and rewarding.”

When asked about her advice for new moms, Alexus emphasized the importance of seeking support: “You don’t have to figure everything out on your own. The Pumping for Working Moms program provides the tools and community to help you succeed.”

Final Thoughts

Alexus’s journey is a testament to the resilience of working moms and the power of a supportive community. For those struggling with the balance of breastfeeding and work, Alexus’s story is proof that with the right guidance and mindset, you can achieve your goals.

As Alexus puts it, “Motherhood is hard, but you’re not supposed to do it alone. Find your tribe, get the help you need, and keep pushing forward.”
