Why Your Milk Supply is Dropping (And What No One’s Telling You!)
So your milk supply is dropping—and you’re starting to panic a little.
You’ve chugged the water.
You’ve baked the lactation cookies.
You’ve tried Body Armor and maybe even bought a new breast pump.
But the ounces just…aren’t there.
If this is you, let me start with this: it’s not your fault.
You are not broken.
You don’t need to try harder.
You just need a better plan.
In this post, I’m going to walk you through what’s actually going on with your supply and what to do about it—without wasting more money, stressing yourself out, or doing “all the things.”
(This post was originally a video. Check it out, here!)
What’s Not Causing the Problem
If you’ve been told that your supply is low because you’re not eating enough oatmeal or drinking enough water or relaxing enough…
I’m going to gently call BS.
Yes, your body needs nutrients and hydration.
Yes, stress plays a role.
But unless you have a rare medical condition (which is very uncommon), your body is capable of producing milk.
The real issue?
Inefficient and ineffective milk removal.
That’s it. That’s the whole thing.
Milk that sits too long = signal to your body to make less = supply drops.
Whether it’s your baby at the breast or your breast pump while you’re away, the key to maintaining (and increasing) your milk supply is consistently and completely removing milk.
So, What’s Actually Causing the Drop?
In the world of pumping, it’s usually one or more of these:
- A mismatch between your pump and your body
- Flange fit issues that reduce milk flow (and cause pain)
- Inconsistent or ineffective pumping frequency
- Leaving milk behind (only triggering one letdown per session)
- Pumping too long—or not long enough—for your body’s natural cycle
Let me say it again: This is not about how many times you pump—it’s about how well you empty the breast.
If you’re not removing milk effectively, your supply will drop. And that’s why so many moms feel like they’re doing everything “right,” but it’s still not working.
What Actually Works: Real Stories from Real Moms
When your pump works with your body (not against it), things can turn around fast.
Here are a few clients who’ve made that shift:
Jessica was spending 45–50 minutes per session just to get one bottle. We adjusted her flange size, customized her pump settings, and taught her how to trigger multiple letdowns. Within a few days, she was pumping the same amount in under 30 minutes—with less stress and no new gear.
Erin was preparing to go back to work when her supply suddenly plummeted. Turns out, her breasts had a smaller storage capacity. She didn’t need longer sessions—she needed more frequent ones. We tweaked her schedule and helped her build a small freezer stash before her first day back.
Bri had tried seven different flange sizes using online tools. Her output was still low and painful. After reviewing a video of her pumping, we recommended a custom size and a different flange style. Days later, her pain was gone and her output was up. Game changer.
These are just a few examples, but they all point to the same solution:
You don’t need to do more. You need to do it differently.
The Framework That Works
Inside my free Milk Supply Workshop, I walk you through the exact three-step process we use in our coaching program to help moms build, protect, and control their milk supply.
Here’s what we cover:
1. Build Your Supply
We eliminate the common mistakes that sabotage supply—wrong flange sizes, misaligned schedules, ineffective pumping routines, and more.
2. Protect Your Supply
We teach you how to consistently and completely remove milk, especially when you’re relying on a breast pump more than the baby. (Working moms—this is for you.)
3. Control Your Supply
Yes, this is possible. You’ll learn how to bounce back from dips, adjust your routine as life changes, and even manage oversupply if that’s where you land.
This framework is built around your body, your schedule, and your life—not someone else’s perfect-looking Instagram routine.
