“The Business of Being Born” Movie Review

by | Jun 28, 2015 | Pregnancy |

The Business of Being Born and More Business of Being Born are some of my favorite documentaries on birth! Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein do a wonderful job of asking the tough questions and opening your eyes to what your options are.

Regardless of the type of birth you’re planning, from a home birth with a midwife to a hospital birth with a physician, these videos present and explain many great options and ideas about giving birth in any setting. There are also several live births shown which is great especially if you’ve never seen one (and thus, use caution when viewing with small children), including (spoiler alert!) an unsuccessful home-birth resulting in C-Section.

I recommend watching these with your significant other or your major support partner. These can open up GREAT discussions on what YOUR ideal birth would entail. You don’t have to agree with all the items discussed in these documentaries, but for those who are unsure what to expect or even what they want, this is a great starting point.

This is not TLC’s “A Baby Story”, and that’s a good thing! Too much media these days portray birth in an unrealistic way and it’s nice to see a new perspective. One of my personal favorite sections, aside from the main documentary that started it all (The Business of Being Born), is the section where celebrities talk about their birth experiences. It was comforting to hear other women talk about their experiences in a positive and empowering way, celebrities or not! You can find great comfort in knowing that millions of other women have done this too, and many actually enjoyed it!

Having a baby is one of the most exciting times in your life. I encourage you to find all the resources you can to help you have a positive and empowering experience. The way you birth matters and it is an event you will remember for the rest of your life! Be informed!
